Freight forwarders for small China to USA imports: an honest comparison
Costs & pricing · Updated
There is no single best freight forwarder for a small import from China, because the companies you are comparing are not the same kind of company. One is a marketplace, one is Amazon, several are China-based DDP specialists, and a courier is a different product again. Which one fits comes down to three things: the weight you actually ship, whether you want US import duty inside the price, and who you want named on the customs entry.
A disclosure first. We are Plain Freight, one of the options below. We have not shipped with the others, so nothing here is a test result: what each company does is taken from what it publishes about itself, checked on 15 September 2026, and our own entry includes what we are not good for. Our prices are published by weight in the China to USA shipping price index if you would rather check the numbers than read the copy.
Key takeaways
- --The companies you are comparing are different categories of business, so decide the category first and the company second.
- --The two questions that change the price most are the divisor and whether duty is inside the number. Ask both in writing.
- --Ask who is named as importer of record. On bundled DDP lanes it is often not you, and that is worth knowing before the goods move.
- --We publish our rate card by weight, dated, at /data/china-usa-shipping-price-index, so you can compare us without asking us anything.
What actually separates these companies
Six things decide whether a forwarder is right for your shipment. None of them is the dashboard.
- The smallest shipment they will quote properly. Plenty of forwarders will answer an email about 20 kg and then quote it as though it were a pallet, because small loads are not what their pricing is built for.
- Whether US import duty is inside the quoted price or billed to you later. This single difference can be 20 to 30% of the goods value and it is the most common reason a cheap quote turns expensive.
- Whether prices are published at all, or every number requires a sales conversation.
- Who files the customs entry, and whose name is on it as importer of record. On some bundled DDP lanes the entry is filed under the forwarder's or their partner's name and bond rather than yours, which changes who holds the record and who answers to customs.
- The divisor used for volumetric weight. A lower divisor means a higher billed weight for the same carton, so two quotes at the same rate per kg are not the same price. The arithmetic is in our chargeable weight reference.
- What happens when something goes wrong: who answers, in what language, in what timezone, and whether the person answering can actually change anything.
Notice what is not on that list. Tracking screens, logos, years in business and the phrase 'one-stop solution' tell you nothing about any of the six.
The options, by what they actually are
Grouped by category, because the category tells you more than the name. Descriptions in quotation marks are how each company describes itself on its own website, checked on 15 September 2026.
- Marketplaces. Freightos calls itself 'the world's online marketplace for the trillion-dollar international shipping industry'. Useful when you want several quotes for a standard lane side by side. You are still picking a forwarder at the end of it, and the small-parcel end of the market is thinly covered.
- Platform forwarders. Flexport presents itself as 'the supply chain logistics platform'. Strong for a growing brand with real volume and a need for visibility across many shipments. A 20 kg restock is not the account it is designed around.
- Digital forwarders aimed at SMBs. Ship4wd advertises 'digital freight forwarding and sourcing solution for SMBs', with free quotes and guaranteed ocean container allocation for FCL and LCL. Sensible where your volumes are container-shaped rather than carton-shaped.
- Amazon's own program. Amazon Supply Chain Services sells ocean freight and customs clearance into its own network. The integration with FBA inbound is the advantage; eligibility and program rules are the constraint.
- China-based DDP specialists. ForwarderOne describes itself as an 'e-commerce freight forwarder: China to USA, FBA and DDP'. DDPCHAIN describes 'air, sea, rail and DDP shipping with customs clearance and delivery'. SINO Shipping publishes country guides and rate ranges across many lanes. This group competes directly for small e-commerce loads, often at a low price per kg with duty bundled. Ask each of them the duty question and the importer of record question in writing.
- Couriers, direct. DHL, FedEx and UPS are the fastest and the simplest to book. The brokerage fee and the duty invoice arrive after delivery, which is the most common unpleasant surprise a first-time importer meets.
- Us, Plain Freight. Shipments from 100 g to about 2,000 kg, one all-in DDP price quoted before anything moves, with US customs clearance and import duty inside the number, and the rate card published by weight rather than held back for a sales call.
Five questions that settle it in ten minutes
Send these to every company on your shortlist, in writing, before you wire anything. The answers, or the silences, separate them faster than any review site.
- What is the total price for my exact weight and carton dimensions, and is US import duty inside that number?
- What divisor do you use for volumetric weight?
- Who files the customs entry, and whose name is on it as importer of record?
- What is not included? Ask specifically about cargo insurance, storage after the free period, a customs exam, and a failed delivery attempt.
- If the goods are held at the border, what do you do, and what does it cost me?
A company that answers all five plainly is worth talking to even if it is not the cheapest. A company that answers the price and skips the other four has told you what its quote is worth.
Where we are the wrong choice
Stated plainly, because a comparison page that finds its author best at everything is an advert.
- We only run China to the United States. Any other origin or destination and we are not an option at all.
- We are new, and we have no published customer reviews yet. If a long reference list is what you need to feel safe, that is a fair reason to pick someone else.
- Our price does not insure the goods. Cargo cover is arranged separately, by you, and we will say so rather than let you assume it is included.
- If you need to be the named importer of record on every entry, under your own bond, ask us before booking: on a bundled DDP lane the entry may be filed under a partner's name, and you should know that before the goods move rather than after.
- For full containers and for regular ocean volume on a contract, a dedicated ocean specialist is a better fit than we are.

FAQ
Who is the best freight forwarder from China to the USA for small shipments?
It depends on the weight and on whether you want duty inside the price. Under about 100 kg with one all-in price, the China-based DDP specialists and we are the direct comparison. For container-shaped ocean volume, an SMB-focused digital forwarder or an ocean specialist fits better. For a marketplace view of several quotes at once, Freightos. There is no answer that is right for every shipment, and any list that gives you one is selling something. Plain Freight's own price, from our pricing engine (2026-09-15): 20 kg of general goods by air is $299.20 door to door with duty included ($14 to $16 per kg up to 35 kg), and air consolidation from 50 kg runs $4 to $11 per kg plus import duty.
Is DDP shipping from China safe to use?
DDP is a legitimate incoterm and a normal way to buy freight. The risk is not the term, it is what a particular company means by it. Get in writing that US import duty and customs clearance are inside the price, ask who is named as importer of record, and ask what happens if the goods are examined. A company that will not put those three answers in an email is the actual red flag.
Do I need my own customs broker?
Not always. On a bundled DDP lane the entry is filed for you, sometimes under the forwarder's or a partner's name and bond rather than yours. That is convenient and it is also a real difference: you do not hold the entry record. If you want to be the importer of record on your own bond, say so before booking and ask the forwarder to confirm in writing that the entry will be filed in your name.
How do I compare two quotes fairly?
Convert both to the same basis before looking at the rate. First, get the billed weight each one will use, which means asking for the divisor. Second, confirm whether US import duty is inside or outside each number. Third, list what each excludes. Two quotes at the same price per kg can differ by a third once the divisor and the duty treatment are the same.
